Excessive mucus and sinus congestion are common, but they can be avoided or lessened by knowing what causes them.
Foods That Increase Congestion
Some foods may cause a build-up of mucus that leads to congestion. The most common food ingredient is lactose, which is found in dairy products like milk and cheese. If you are already sick or have allergies, stay away from dairy products.
Dust and Allergens
Your sinuses can be aggravated by allergens in the house or outside. A build-up of dust, pollen or dander can inflame the sinuses and cause mucus.
If you constantly have sinus problems, you may have a sinus infection. Being exposed to allergens on a regular basis inflames the sinuses, blocking your airways and causing an overflow of mucus. Sinus infections can last from two to eight weeks, but can become chronic if the allergens are not removed.
Sometimes problems with the nose’s structure cause added congestion and sinus problems. The most common of these structural issues is a deviated septum, which means that the septum of the nose is not properly aligned. This may cause sinus problems, headaches, nose bleeds and a mucus build-up.
Colds and Infections
The most common reason for increased mucus and sinus congestion is getting sick. The common cold is often to blame for a mucus build-up, especially if the mucus is yellow in color. Bronchitis can also cause a mucus build-up. It is important to talk to your doctor when you come down with these ailments.
