Naturopathic doctors attend doctoral programs to learn about homeopathic medicine, botanical medicine, acupuncture and preventive health. Most naturopathic programs are full-time, four-year programs, though some schools offer a part-time, six-year option as well. A variety of naturopathic physician programs can be found in the United States and Canada.

Alternative Medicine College of Canada

Located in Montreal, the Alternative Medicine College of Canada offers a distance-learning program suitable for working adults. The distance-learning program, which includes coursework in naturopathy, homeopathy and bioenergetics, offers a flexible schedule and is available to students who have previously completed the college’s 450-hour naturopathic health practitioner program. Upon completion of the distance-learning program, students are required to complete an additional 450 hours of coursework in order to graduate from the program as a naturopathic doctor. Throughout the course of the program, students complete an internship and a research thesis.

Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Services

Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Services is located in Tempe, a small suburb of Phoenix. The college’s full-time, four-year program leads to degrees in naturopathic medicine and acupuncture and includes coursework in homeopathy, naturopathy and Western healing practices including herbology. The program includes an internship during each of the last two years of the program. Students should avoid working while in the program due to its intensive time requirements.

University of Bridgeport College of Natural Medicine

Located in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the University of Bridgeport College of Natural Medicine offers a full-time, four-year program leading to a degree in naturopathy. Students in the program spend the first two years in the classroom, learning about anatomy and physiology, homeopathy and preventive medicine. During the last two years of the program, in addition to spending time in the classroom, students partake in clinical experiences to practice the skills they have learned.
