Hives is a symptom that is a result of histamine release under the skin. Hives appear very suddenly on the skin in raised, swollen patches. Hives can cause itching, pain and stinging. Hives can blend together to form larger welts on the skin and can last for a few hours, and up to a day, before they fade away. Hives can also be characterized by the swelling of the face, lips and tongue.
Oatmeal and Cornstarch
One way to effectively reduce the appearance of hives is to make a paste with oatmeal and cornstarch. Mix a paste of 2 cups of oatmeal and 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. Mix in a little bit of water until you can make a thick paste. Apply the paste directly to the affected area for approximately 15 to 30 minutes and rinse. The paste will dehydrate the hives within a few hours. You can also bathe in a cool bath with cornstarch and oatmeal. Add 3 tablespoons of cornstarch and 6 tablespoons of oatmeal to the bath, and soak for 15 to 30 minutes.
Sodium bicarbonate is an alkaline that will neutralize the rash. Mylanta or milk of magnesia also works to reduce the acidity in the rash. Use a cotton ball to apply both of these directly to the hives. Antacids have a calming effect on the skin and dry out the rash with a few hours. It can work on any rash of the skin and will provide almost instant relief with itching.
Many fresh herbs work well on relieving the symptoms of hives. Fresh jewel weed can be crushed and gently rubbed on to the area. Teas made with amaranth seeds are easy to make and can instantly relieve you of hives. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of amaranth to 3 cups of boiling water, and steep for about 20 minutes. Try adding a little of the jewel weed to the tea. If your hives are causing a lot of pain and itching, you can use the tea and jewel weed to make a poultice to apply directly to the skin. You can even pour it in your bath water.
