How Does The Hcg Injection Work

Fertility – Women

HCG, also known as human chorionic gonadotropin, is often used as a fertility medication. HCG injections work by triggering ovulation when there is at least one mature ovarian follicle. This can occur about 36 to 48 hours following the HCG injection. HCG injections are also used to help facilitate pregnancy by sustaining levels of progesterone.

Fertility – Men

HCG injections can also be used for men when they have impotence problems. It can increase sperm count. HCG increases intratesticular testosterone by triggering leydig cells. Men may choose to use HCG injections for hypogonadism.

Weight Loss

HCG injections have also been used to aid in weight loss, however this is experimental, and has not been proven to actually work. It may also be unsafe. Possibly, HCG triggers the hypothalamus into preserving lean muscle and targeting fat deposits instead. This is an unproven theory.

Warning

Possible side effects of HCG injections include numbness; redness or pain in your legs or arms; or dizziness, severe headaches and confusion. Those are signs of a possible blood clot–call your doctor if you develop any of them. The following symptoms may indicate ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): stomach pain or swelling, nausea, vomiting, pelvic pain or swelling of the legs or hands. OHSS is a potentially life-threatening condition; be sure to call your doctor immediately if you develop these symptoms.
