How Does Oscillococcinum Work

How Does Oscillococcinum work?

Next time you feel achy, have a fever or the chills consider taking Oscillococcinum. Also known as Oscillo, Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic alternative medicine that is used to treat influenza-like symptoms. Produced by Boiron, a company specializing in homeopathic products, Oscillo is believed to reduce the severity and duration of flu symptoms. Available in health food stores, pharmacies and grocery stores, Oscillo has no side effects or interactions with other medications.

What is Oscillococcinum?

The active ingredient in Oscillococcinum is listed as anas barbariae hepatis et cordis extractum 200K HPUS, which is an extract of duck heart and liver. Sucrose and lactose are the inactive ingredients. Homeopathic treatments are based on the theory that “like cures like.” Therefore, because waterfowl are a natural source of the influenza virus, anas barbariae extract can be used as a homeopathic treatment for influenza in humans.

Oscillococcinum is available in packages of three or six unit doses. Each unit dose is in an individual tube containing tiny white pellets that are easily dissolved. Oscillo may be taken by adults and children who are at least two years of age. Begin taking the first of three doses at the first signs of flu symptoms. Dissolve the entire contents of one tube of Oscillo in the mouth and then take the two remaining doses at six hour intervals.

As with any medication, do not use if the package seal has been broken. Please consult a health professional before giving Oscillo to a child under two years old or if you are pregnant or nursing. If the symptoms worsen or have persisted for more than three days contact a doctor. Diabetics should be aware that Oscillococcinum does contain sugar.
