Homeopathic Ways To Induce Labor

When a woman is past her due date for giving birth, she may experience anxiety and anticipation. There are several homeopathic techniques a woman can use in order to induce labor at home. These techniques have been proven to be safe and effective. These natural inducing techniques should not be used unless the woman is in full term pregnancy (over 40 weeks) because before then, the baby may need more time to fully develop.

Castor Oil

Taking castor oil to induce labor has been used by women for many decades. Castor oil works by causing spasms in the woman’s intestines. These spasms will cause the uterus to cramp, causing contractions that may result in labor. It is best to take one to four ounces of castor oil for a single dose. It can be mixed with orange juice so that it’s not as oily. The castor oil can be taken as a single dose or in many doses depending on the results. Be advised that castor oil will usually cause the bowels to empty within three hours.

Nipple Stimulation

Nipple stimulation is another natural way of to induce labor. This can be done during or apart from sexual intercourse. The oxytocin hormone, which causes contractions, is released as a result of this stimulation. These contractions can sometimes result in labor. Nipple stimulation can be done manually or with the use of an electric breast pump. When trying nipple stimulation, massage one breast at a time for about five minutes. If contractions are felt and are at least three minutes apart, do not continue with the stimulation. Labor could occur shortly after.

Sexual Intercourse

Sexual intercourse near the baby’s due date can also cause a woman to go into labor naturally. When a man ejaculates, his semen contains chemicals called prostaglandins. It is important for the man to ejaculate into the woman’s vagina because the prostaglandins will help the cervix to soften and prepare to open. By having sex, the cervix can dilate at a faster rate than on its own. A woman should not induce labor by having sexual intercourse if she is on bed rest, her water has been broken, or if she is earlier than 38 weeks pregnant.

Eat Certain Foods

Some foods that can cause labor are eggplant parmesan, licorice, pineapple and spicy foods. The eggplant will not induce labor, but basil and oregano contain properties that may cause uterine contractions. Licorice and pineapple work in a similar way as prostaglandins do in helping the cervix to soften. Eating a lot of licorice may result in mild diarrhea. This can cause intestinal spasms which can lead to uterine contractions. Spicy foods can also increase prostaglandin production.

Long, brisk walking can help to induce labor as well. It allows the hips to sway from side to side, bringing the baby into the correct position for birth. Gravity will help to move the baby down towards the pelvis. The physical movement can also help to stimulate the muscles and prepare for contractions. In addition, walking can help to ease some of the stress of pregnancy. Women who have a high-risk pregnancy or who are at risk of a premature labor should avoid walking and allow labor to occur naturally and in a medical facility.
