Acidity of the stomach is an issue many people deal with. The stomach contains hydrochloric acid, which is used to help digest the food that is consumed. Sometimes the stomach secretes too much acid and the acid does not break down as it should. This causes many side effects that can be uncomfortable. Fortunately, there are natural ways to treat the acidity.
Causes of Acidity
A good way to keep the acid levels down is to know what causes acidity. Stress and fiberless foods are two main causes of acidity. Smoking, excess alcohol and spicy foods are also known to irritate the stomach, which causes the release of more acid.
What to Eat to Decrease Acidity
Some home relief for acidity comes from eating specific items, such as a clove of garlic, mint juice, watermelon, bananas, cucumbers and dairy products. You can also mix 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar with water and drink the mixture before meals. Many people find that herbal tea or tea with licorice also helps. Yogurt provides immediate relief for acidity, as does 1 to 2 tbsp. of white vinegar.
If the acidity is a level that will not go away with a simple remedy, switch to an acid-free diet until your stomach is able to adjust how much acid is produced. A milk, cream, butter, fruit and vegetable diet would be the optimal choice. Once the stomach has begun to regulate itself, return to a normal diet. Keep in mind the things that would irritate the stomach, and keep those to a minimum.
