Many natural health practitioners believe that colon cleansers are necessary to rid the body of built-up toxins and bacterias due to the plethora of processed foods and chemicals that are in our diet. Many western doctors disagree, saying the body has its own mechanism to dispose of waste and intervening is unnecessary. Either way, there is not much evidence to support or refute the benefits, and many people look to homeopathic cleansing to improve health.
Simple Colon Cleanse Recipe
Awakening Health has a rather straightforward home colon-cleanse recipe that mirrors many of the others tauted on the web. Have your blender ready and a tall glass, as the idea is to mix and rapidly gulp the concoction. Combine one tbsp. of psyllium seed husk, one tbsp. of Bentonite clay, two cups of water, and 1/2 cup of fresh juice (or other, bottled is fine). Do not use citrus juice as it will increase the cleansing process and can make you feel sick.
While cleansing you prepare and consume this drink every three hours. In between, you can drink as much room-temperature water as you like.
Apple Juice Colon Cleanse Alternative
An alternative to ingesting ingredients you are unfamiliar with is the apple juice cleanse. Elizabeth Yarnell’s website Effortlesseating.com recommends the following regime:
Start by drinking one 16-ounce glass of organic, unfiltered prune juice. Follow this by drinking 2 cups of room-temperature water within 30 minutes of ingesting the prune juice. Drink one cup of organic, unfiltered apple juice, followed 30 minutes later by an eight-ounce glass of water. You will continue this every 30 minutes until bedtime. At any time you can add another 16 ounces of unfiltered, organic prune juice.
Most sites recommend cleansing for three days or until your bowel movements become clear. Listen to your body and if you feel you need to quit, do so. It’s best to consult your physician when undertaking a cleanse. If you have serious health conditions such as diabetes, you may be advised to stay clear of cleansing.
