Home Remedies For Skin Discoloration

Skin discoloration caused by sun exposure and melasma can be very hard to treat. It often goes deeper than the skin’s top layer. However, many home remedies can be helpful to improve skin’s appearance and to help reduce the dark-colored spots caused by melasma and sun exposure. Skin discoloration has several causes. Melasma, which causes dark-colored areas to form, usually is the result of pregnancy, birth control pills, endocrine dysfunction or genetics. Sun exposure is another cause of dark splotches on the face and hands. These spots are often referred to as age spots or liver spots because they typically appear on older people after years of sun damage. Sun exposure also can increase instances of melasma.

Paste and Mask Remedies

Several pastes and masks can used to help clear up skin discoloration. For a paste, dry orange peels in the sun. Grind the dried peels into a powder. Mix raw milk with the peels to form the paste. Apply it daily to your skin. After it dries, rinse it with lukewarm water.

You also can mix sandalwood powder with lemon juice, tomato juice and cucumber juice to form a paste. Apply it on your skin and leave it until it dries.

Gram flour, made from ground chickpeas, is another whitening agent. Mix two spoonfuls of gram flour with a pinch of turmeric, a few drops of lemon juice and a few drops of milk cream. Apply the resulting paste to your face. Scrub it off. Use this paste daily.

Potatoes contain bleaching agents, and the juice of a potato can help reduce dark splotches. Rub the juice, or even a raw potato, on your face every day.

Mix peeled almonds that have been soaked overnight with honey. Apply the resulting paste to your face and scrub it off when it dries.

Combine a teaspoon of milk powder, a teaspoon of honey, a teaspoon of lemon juice and half a teaspoon of almond oil. Put the mixture on your face and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes.

Grate a tomato and mix in two or three drops of lime juice. Leave this mixture on your face for 20 minutes. Do this twice daily.

Combine oatmeal with curd and tomato juice. Leave the mixture on your face for 20 minutes before washing it off with cold water.


Exfoliating helps to lighten melasma and sun spots, too, by removing the top layer of dead skin and making room for healthier skin underneath.

To make an exfoliating scrub, mix two tablespoons of ground oatmeal with two tablespoons each of sugar and brown sugar; add a pinch a nutmeg and one-half cup of almond oil. Mix these ingredients well. Wet your face. Rub the scrub onto your face using circular motions. Rinse your face well.
