Herbal Cure For Shingles

Herbal Cure for Shingles

Shingles develops due to a virus, herpes varicella-zoster, which is also the cause of chicken pox. It infects a nerve and the area of skin around it, causing pain, rash and a multitude of other symptoms. The virus lies dormant in nerve cells of the body well after chicken pox has cleared.

Symptoms associated with shingles include rash, headache, memory loss, pain, fever, confusion, fatigue, upset stomach and abdominal pains. Postherpetic neuralgia, severe nerve pain, can occur if the nerves are damaged. The pain can continue long after shingles are gone.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is an herb from the mint family that can be used as a cream and rubbed directly on the affected area. Lemon balm can be purchased from most retail or health food stores. Another way to use lemon balm is in a tea. For best results, mix the lemon balm with mint herb for a mixed mint tea. Also boil the lemon balm in water with another herb, such as oregano, peppermint, thyme or spearmint.

Red Pepper

What makes red pepper so hot is the ingredient, capsaicin. Creams mixed with the herb relieve pain from shingles. Capsaicin blocks pain signals from nerves beneath the skin. Mix red pepper with any white skin lotion until it turns pink. Apply as needed.

Licorice Root

Licorice root helps the with pain and inflammation from shingles. Fresh licorice root can be bought at the super market in the produce section, often called anise root. Most health food stores also carry the dry herb. Boil the licorice root with water to make a tea, and drink a small amount each day until the shingles clear. Also, apply a heavy mixture of licorice tea directly to the shingles area daily.

A mixture of soybean and watercress, both containing lysine, may inhibit the replicaton of the shingles virus. Either add more foods containing both, such as spinach, butter beans, peas or black bean sprouts daily, or visit a local health store for a supplement.

Pears contain an antiviral caffeic acid, which is a natural antioxidant. It works directly on the target of the virus causing shingles. Eat pears, or cut into pieces, mix and blend with water, to make a juice. The juice from any fresh pear contains large amounts of the antiviral caffeic acid. Fresh pears are the best route to go in order to obtain the full healing effect of the antiviral caffeic acid for shingles.

Essential oils, such as such as camomile, bergamot, eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, lemon or teatree, can be applied to shingles directly. These can be purchased at your local health food store. To avoid a reaction, mix two to three drops of vegetable oil to seven drops of essential oils.
