Garlic Home Remedies For Wisdom Tooth Pain

Garlic has long been used for many kinds of home remedies. It has antibacterial properties and can help reduce the pain of wisdom teeth as they grow. If you have simple tooth pain, garlic is a simple and effective remedy in many cases. If the pain does not subside in a few days, see your dentist.

Antibacterial

As many cooks know who have accidentally cut or sliced themselves in the kitchen, garlic has antibacterial properties. Several studies published by the National Institutes of health cite garlic (allium sativum) to have “broad antiseptic” properties that kills germs and bacteria. This prevents infection in the mouth, where bacteria are always present. Applying cut and crushed garlic (to release the oil) against the cut will prevent infection. Doing the same with wisdom teeth pain can yield the same results.

What to Do with garlic

Peel and crush a small clove of garlic and place directly into the mouth between the painful wisdom teeth and the gum line. If you do not like the taste or smell of garlic, place the crushed garlic into a dark-colored glass jar with a food-grade oil, such as olive oil. Steep for several days. Apply the garlic-infused olive oil to the teeth. This is a less powerful application of garlic, but it may still provide some pain relief.

Cautions

As wisdom teeth come in, they may be angled at a painful angle as they push up through the gum line in the mouth. When this happens, telltale throbbing pain is common. If it is appropriate, you might need to have the wisdom teeth removed.

If the teeth become infected, it can introduce bacteria into the bloodstream and it can even be fatal as the bacteria is carried to the heart. If there is any discoloration to the teeth or neighboring teeth, see your dentist immediately.
