Cure gum disease with home remedies.
Gum disease, known in the dental profession as “periodontal disease,” affects as many as 40 million Americans each year. Beginning as slightly swollen gums (gingivitis), this disease may go unnoticed until substantial bone loss in the jaw occurs. Dentists agree that our modern diet of soft, over-processed foods and substances that decay tooth enamel all contribute to gum disease. Medical treatments include laser therapy, root planning and tooth extraction. Alternatively, you can try to cure gum disease with home remedies.
1. Massage your gums daily. You may use a rubber bristle toothbrush or your thumb and index finger. Dedicate 5 minutes, twice a day to gently rubbing your gums. Some people find they can do this with one hand while commuting to and from work. Just pay attention to your driving. Massage stimulates circulation in your gums, hastening the healing process and flushing away bacteria.
2. Supplement your diet with vitamins that promote healthy gum re-growth. 1000 mg of Vitamin C daily will encourage healing. Other vitamins beneficial to gum health include B-complex, magnesium and zinc. Get additional Vitamin C by replacing sugary sodas with orange juice. Coenzyme Q-10 is another supplement that may aid in re-growing gum tissue.
3. Turn to herbs for powerful healing properties. Unbeknownst to many today, some of the most popular prescription medications come from nature. You can benefit from using these same formulations in their natural state. These herbs are available in health food stores and from online sources.
4. Steep 1 teaspoon of dry burdock root in a cup of water until it cools to room temperature. After brushing, rinse your mouth with the liquid, taking the time to swish each mouthful around and between your teeth. You may also harvest a handful of red rose petals and make a mouthwash in the same way.
5. Find fresh rosemary in the produce department of your local grocery or grow some of this beneficial herb on your windowsill. Crush a few leaves and use during your daily massages. Rosemary boosts circulation, helping speed the healing process.
6. Brush with baking soda. This is a popular ingredient in toothpastes and tooth powders because it purifies and freshens the mouth while gently cleaning the teeth. Keep a small jar of baking soda in your bathroom and dip a damp toothbrush before brushing a minimum of twice a day.
7. Pretend your toothbrush is electric. While you can purchase a power toothbrush, it will probably rotate from side to side quickly. What you need is a very fast back and forth motion, directed right at the area where your teeth meet your gumline. Don’t press, just use very quick brushing motions to remove plaque buildup at and just under the gumline. If your gums bleed, you’re brushing too hard. Try a soft bristle brush and let the motion work for you.
8. Add a drop of tea tree oil twice a week to your brushing routine. Any more than that and you may irritate the tender gums. Tea tree oil acts as an antiseptic and an antibiotic to reduce localized infections.
9. Apply 100% pure aloe vera to your gums before going to bed. Just a dab is all it takes. Smooth it over your gums and allow it to remain in your mouth without swallowing if possible to boost your nocturnal healing process.
